How to Spice Up Your Month with a Virtual Holiday Trivia Event

Every time I ask someone how they are holding up, I get the same response: “Every day feels exactly the same!” These days, no one knows the difference between Tuesday and Saturday. There are no more weekends, holidays or events to look forward to. Since its inception in summer 2020, Bar None Games has been on a mission to boost work-from-home morale across the globe

In 2020, we hosted almost 200 virtual holiday parties for companies of all sizes. We hosted Thanksgiving trivia, Christmas trivia, Hanukkah trivia and New Year’s Eve trivia with nearly 5,000 people all across the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, India and Mexico. Coworkers dressed in their holiday finest showcased their celebratory Zoom backgrounds and sent around festive food to their coworkers and friends so they could all eat “together. Whether for your next corporate team-building activity or for a personal virtual party, we are ready to continue the fun for each and every holiday that is right around the corner. Get ready to celebrate the holidays virtually with Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day trivia, Black History Month trivia, St. Patrick’s Day trivia, Cinco de Mayo trivia, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day trivia, Birthday trivia, Baby Shower trivia and more!

To make sure your holiday party is a guaranteed hit, we have come up with a six-step plan on how to bring everyone together and make sure you keep the celebrations alive with trivia games to play on Zoom.

Step 1: Track important dates on your calendar & plan ahead

When every day is the same, it is really easy to miss important holidays like Black History Month, your best friend’s birthday or Mother’s Day. Ensure that you put all of those important dates in your reminders now and plan ahead! This year, in a year when we have seen unprecedented numbers of people mobilizing together for racial justice, and when we finally have our first woman VP (let’s shatter that glass ceiling), make sure that you, your friends and your company do not forget to honor those that paved the way for us by celebrating virtually together.

Step 2: Find your most responsible friend (or coworker)

You know the one that we are talking about. The one that organizes everyone’s birthday presents, plans everyone’s bachelorettes and makes all of the dinner reservations for the group. Make sure you have a point person to coordinate logistics, put a hold on everyone’s calendar, and build excitement ahead of the big event.

Step 3: Tailor the list to the event

There are many people in this world that I love, but I certainly would not want them at all of the same events. For Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I am ready to gather my entire family, even those that live halfway around the world. We’ll laugh, tell embarrassing stories about when my cousins were little, and remind my grandma that she cannot eat expired food. For Cinco de Mayo, I’m looking for a different vibe. The only choice is a full-on dance party with my best girlfriends; the more music rounds, the better.

Step 4: Have everyone dress up

My sweatpants and leggings have become a little too worn out during this pandemic. Give people a reason to get dressed up and into the holiday spirit. There really is nothing like seeing a coworker with Easter bunny ears on or dressed as a Frozen character for Halloween at their kids’ request for the fifth year in a row.

Step 5: Make sure everyone has the same food and drinks

Miss going to bars with your friends? Same! Create your own virtual pub this St. Patty’s Day! Make sure that everyone at your virtual holiday event has a Guinness (or four), so that you can do some virtual toasts. And don’t forget about Galentine’s Day! Gather all of your closest gals from college, work and high school in one “room”, put on matching all black outfits and send around pints of ice cream to eat together on February 14th. Once summer hits, the Fourth of July is the perfect excuse to get your family together over Zoom for some Firecracker popsicles and, for those over 21, a nice cold beer.

Step 6: Save for a celebration prize

For corporate events, allocate some of your budget towards a celebration prize to up the competitive stakes. For friends and family events, gather a few dollars from each person so that you can properly celebrate the winning team. The winning team can decide whether to receive a surprise gift from the winners’ pool or put the money toward your next virtual celebration together!

So mark your calendars, appoint “that” friend (or coworker!), gather your crew, put on your best outfit and plan your next virtual holiday trivia event. I promise, it will help you remember whether it is Tuesday, Saturday, or Cinco de Mayo.
