Why Lerner Solutions views us as their distributed team’s “culture-as-a-service”
“My team is spread across many different states, and Bar None Games is the only place I turn to when I want a fun event to do with them.”
- James Alcus, Senior Manager
About James Alcus
James Alcus is a Senior Information Technology Manager at Lerner Solutions who manages a team of 30 people across the United States.
James joined Lerner Solutions, a managed IT services firm, in 2017.
The challenge
After the pandemic, Lerner Solutions transitioned from being fully in-office to hybrid. While offices are now open, many employees prefer to work from home and it’s widely accepted by the company to allow for remote employees.
James’ biggest challenge is keeping his remote employees engaged. It’s easy to talk about only work when you’re remote and lose sight that there’s another person at the other end. Team morale becomes challenging to keep positive and relationships start to fracture.
As a manager with a never ending To Do list, it’s especially challenging to manage a remote team, as most meetings are scheduled tightly with an agenda, not allowing for much room for personal catch ups.
“Having team events where people can participate in something that’s not work-related has been crucial to our team.”
The solution
Over the last 3 quarters, Bar None Games has hosted quarterly events for James’ team. With varied content, each event felt new and exciting every time.
Halloween-themed trivia event: Covered Halloween in pop culture, spooky music, and Halloween-inspired creative questions
Curated trivia event: Specially curated content based on James’ team’s interests in travel and movies
Mini games event: A fast-paced competition involving a Family Feud-inspired round of Survey Says, a Word Puzzler, and an Online Scavenger Hunt
The results
30 employees brought together virtually on a quarterly basis
Employees spread across Texas, South Carolina, and New York who typically would not be able to spend casual time together
Consistent positive feedback from the team
“Bar None Games is our go-to when it comes to a remote team event”
The future
Because of the consistent reliability that Bar None Games brought to all of the game experiences, James is simplifying it for himself even further. Instead of having to keep “Plan a team event” on his To Do list every few months, James is engaging with Bar None Games in a once-a-quarter subscription package. This way, he knows that his team will consistently have a variety of fun events throughout the year.
“I view Bar None Games as ‘culture-as-a-service’”
