How to Celebrate a Work Anniversary Virtually

A cupcake, which is a good work anniversary celebration idea

There’s cake in the breakroom! Remember work anniversary celebrations when everyone worked in the office?

With so many people working remotely, sometimes it feels like we’re missing out on these moments of employee recognition. The thing is, there’s no reason we can’t recognize years of service even for employees that work from home.

To help make sure that your coworkers or employees feel special on their big day, we’ve put together a few ways to celebrate a work anniversary virtually that can help with employee engagement across remote teams.

How do you virtually celebrate a coworker's work anniversary?

Slack Shoutouts

Maybe the easiest way to celebrate a work anniversary remotely is a shoutout on Slack, Teams, or whatever connectivity platform you may use. Share something kind, supportive, or funny, but most of all help your coworker celebrate their special day. If your team uses social media frequently, that’s another great (and public) place to recognize employees.

Send a card

Sending a card or an e-card is an easy and impactful work anniversary celebration idea. Cards can be funny or sincere, they can be store-bought or handmade (or digital). Combine them with a gift card to your remote employee’s favorite coffee shop.

Give Themed Anniversary Gifts

Wedding anniversaries traditionally have themes associated with them. Why not theme a work anniversary gift? Gifts.com says that the traditional 5th-anniversary gift is wood. Maybe a nice clock, framed photo, or fancy wood pen?

If a gift is thoughtful and meaningful, it doesn’t need to be expensive.

Have a Zoom Reception

If there isn’t room in the budget for gifts, then consider an event. A Zoom reception where all team members are invited can be a lot of fun. These can be a Happy Hour event, a bring-your-own-cupcake reception, or just a casual chat.

In an article from Forbes, Mikaela Kilner from Reverb describes an event of this nature, “next month, our team, which spans six states, is going to a virtual chocolate tasting where every team member will receive a box of gourmet chocolate and an expert will guide us over Zoom.” This type of event would make a great work anniversary idea.

Throw a Virtual Party

And finally, if you are ready to take it up a notch, plan a full virtual party. Perhaps you have a quarterly gathering where you recognize work anniversaries. You could turn it into a party in recognition of the number of years that your employees or coworkers have put in.

At Bar None Games, we specialize in just this type of virtual party. Our Virtual Trivia events, for example, are perfect for celebrating work anniversaries. They are great fun and designed to get your team laughing and working together.

Truly, there is no better way to celebrate a work anniversary virtually than make the team stronger. A hosted Virtual Trivia event is a great way to do just that.
